The Fire of Hell in the Koran

All Muslims expect to spend their eternal lives in Heaven (jannah), but many will fall short. The unbelievers and the evildoers face another destiny: The Fire of Hell (Yahannam). The Qur'an contains many warnings and descriptions of the severity of this eternal punishment.

The Burning Fire
The consistent description of Hell in the Koran is like a blazing fire that is fed by "men and stones". Therefore, it is often called "fire of hell".

"... TEMED THE FIRE WHOSE FUEL ARE THE MEN AND THE STONES, PREPARED FOR THE INCREDULES" [NOBLE Quran 2:24]

"... Yahannam will suffice them like burning fire. Those who have refused to believe in Our signs, we will throw them into a fire, ... Allah is always Unsurpassed without equal, Sage. He is Exalted in Power, Wise. "[Noble Koran 4: 55-56]

"But one whose actions are light in the Balance, will have as a mother an abyss. And what will make you understand what that is? It is a scorching fire. "[Noble Koran 101: 8-11]

Cursed by Allah
The worst punishment for unbelievers and evildoers will be to realize that they have failed. They did not listen to the guidance and warnings of Allah, and so they gained His wrath. The Arabic word, jahannam, means "a dark storm" or "a severe expression". Both exemplify the seriousness of this punishment. The Koran says:

"The curse of Allah, that of the angels and that of men, at the same time, will fall upon those who have refused to believe and have died being unbelievers. They will be immortal in the Fire and will not be relieved of punishment or granted any postponement. "[Noble Koran 2: 161-162]

"THOSE ALLAH HAVE CURSED THEM AND WHO WHO ALLAH IS CURSED, YOU WILL NOT FIND WHO IS HELPING HIM" [NOBLE CORÁN 4:52]

Boiling water
Normally water brings relief and extinguishes the fire. The water in Hell, however, is different.

"They are two adversaries who argue over their Lord. Those who did not believe will be cut off dressed in fire and boiling water will be poured on their heads. With it will melt whatever is in their bellies and skin. And there will be iron clubs for them. Every time they feel anxious to leave, they will be returned. Taste the punishment of Hariq! "[Noble Koran 22: 19-22]

"He will have Yahannam behind him and he will be given to drink from a water of pus." [Noble Koran 14:16]

"THEY WILL GO AND WILL RETURN BETWEEN THEIR FIRE AND A WATER WHIRLING." [NOBLE CORÁN 55:44]

Tree of Zaqqum
While the rewards of Heaven include plenty of fresh fruit and milk, the inhabitants of Hell will eat of the Tree of Zaqqum. The Qur'an describes it:

"What is better accommodation, this or tree of Zaqqum? We have done it as punishment for the unjust. It is a tree that comes from the very root of the Yahim, whose buds look like the head of demons. From him they will eat and fill their stomachs And they will also have a potion of boiling water. Then, his place of destination will be the Yahim. "[Noble Koran 37: 62-68]

"Certainly the tree of Zaqqum, will be the food of the evil one. Like molten metal, it will melt in your bellies like the boiling of boiling water. "[Noble Koran 44: 43-46]

 No Second Possibilities
When they are dragged into Hell-Fire, many people will instantly repent of the decisions they made in their lives and ask for another opportunity. The Qur'an warns such people:

"THE FOLLOWERS WILL DIRECT: IF WE HAD ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY, WE WOULD GIVE BACK TO THE SAME AS THEY HAVE GIVEN US TO US!" [NOBLE Quran 2: 167]
